Stepping Back in Time in Central City: Village Art & Antiques
Photos and Story by Katie Marshall, HRCC Intern
At Village Antiques & Art, every corner holds a surprise. From vintage treasures to locally crafted art, each piece and section has the power to transport you back in time. Wander through the shop and you might stumble upon something that sparks a childhood memory or recalls a piece your grandmother once treasured. More than just a store, it’s a place where history is celebrated, creativity flourishes, and the community bands together. Every item tells an interesting story, inviting visitors to connect with the past, local artists, and with the charm of the Central City Antiques District.

Village Antiques & Art has been a staple of the Huntington community for decades. “This location has been a business for many years, I think it began business in the 70s or 80s. Over the years, the building has changed ownership several times. Six years ago, the nonprofit RenewAll Inc. took ownership.. That’s when we started focusing on building a bridge between the antiques, vintage, local art, culture, and history,” said Denise Poole, Social Enterprise Hub Manager at RenewAll, who oversees the operations at Village Antiques & Art.
Much of the museum part of the shop comes from local historian Earl Ray Bush, who spent 45 years collecting artifacts tied to Central City.

“For many years, he had a museum behind his home in town," Poole said. "As he got older, it was harder and harder to do tours, but he really felt passionate about keeping these items in Central City.”
Both Village Antiques & Art and RenewAll also plays a big role in Central City’s cultural life.
"We (RenewAll) are one of the main organizers of Central City events like old Central City Days, which is a Central tradition in June that’s gone on for decades. This year all the shops participating will have window displays with different kinds of glass. We’re going to have glass blowers here, maybe do a deep dive into the history of how glass is made and why we don’t have as much glass anymore”.
Beyond that, the shop hosts annual maker's fairs and artists exhibits. Denise hopes that every visitor leaves with a sense of connection and lasting memories.
“I hope that people have memories of having a good experience of the people they interacted with here. That they’re passionate about their work and what they’re doing, that they carry vivid images of everything, from the murals on our buildings and the architecture, to the overall feeling of being in a community that’s unique and timeless."

Looking ahead, the shop plans to continue growing while continuously supporting the local community.
“We intend to expand and grow, support more shops, host more events, and welcome more visitors. The hope is that people recognize the area, enjoy their experiences, and that the community continues to thrive.”
Beyond these goals, the shop is focused on strengthening connections within the neighborhood, highlighting local talent, and creating opportunities that bring people together. Each initiative is designed to make the area a more vibrant, welcoming destination for both residents and visitors alike.
