Not Your Average Bookstore: Cicada Books & Coffee

Photos and story by Katie Marshall, HRCC Intern

With vibrant shelves, the smell of coffee in the air, and an eclectic atmosphere that invites visitors to stay awhile, Cicada Books & Coffee offers more than just a place to buy books. The independent bookstore has become a unique gathering spot where readers can browse, sip on a latte, and enjoy a space that feels welcoming to everyone.

When Cicada Books & Coffee first opened in the Central City Antiques District 2018, its owners wanted to create something special for local readers. Competing with large chain retailers & digital reading meant thinking creatively about what the shop could offer.

“We opened the store in 2018 and there were no real independent bookstores around, chain stores only. And you decide from the start, that to do that in the the era of Amazon and Kindles, that we needed to also do something else,” co-owner Dawn Hylbert said.

That “something else” helped shape the store into the space it is today. Cicada Books & Coffee started with coffee and has since gradually expanded its menu. The shop now welcomes customers to relax with a hot cup of tea or a warm bagel straight from New York while browsing the shelves.

The shop also offers a wide array of both new and used books across every genre. They carry a large number of used titles, including a substantial children’s section, as well as carefully curated new books. Many of those titles feature local authors and locally published work, helping showcase writers from Appalachia. In addition to books, the store also sells unique gifts and merchandise, much of which is made by local creators.

Beyond its vast selection of books & goods, Cicada Books has grown into a place where people gather and create memories. Visitors often stop in to study, meet friends, or attend one of the shop’s events.

“I think that people will remember enjoying themselves coming here,” Dawn said.

Over the years, the store has hosted a variety of community events, including book signings, board game nights, writer's groups, and even Cicada Fest. For some visitors, Cicada has even become the setting for meaningful, personal moments.

“We’ve had people tell us about first dates here.” Dawn said.

Through its mix of books, coffee, local creativity, and community events, Cicada Books continues to offer a colorful space where visitors can slow down, explore the shelves , and discover something new.
